Fire Safety Tips

Summer is here! Ensure it's a great Grilling Season
Prevent Cooking Emergencies
Fire Extinguisher Know How's
Place the BBQ at least a 3 meters  distance from your home or other structures and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.

- Make sure your grill is located on a flat. level surface.

- Keep the BBQ away from paths of travel and play areas

- Use long handled utensils to keep a safe distance form heat and flames.

- When a BBQ is in use, never leave it unattended.

- Keep children and pets away from the BBQ.

- Ensure the BBQ is fully cooled off   before covering or storing away.

- If possible, have a portable residential fire extinguisher nearby.
- Stay in the kitchen while you are cooking, if you leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the stove. The leading cause of a kitchen fire is unattended cooking.

- If you are simmering, baking, or roasting, check it regularly. Use a timer to remind you if needed.

- Keep anything that can catch fire like oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging and towels away   form your stovetop.

- Cover an oil fire with a lid or use a fire extinguisher. Never attempt to extinguish a cooking oil fire with water.

- Every house should have a       functioning ABC-rated fire           extinguisher, stored in an easily accessible spot. There may not be time to read the instructions before tackling the flames, so it's important that you understand how to properly use the extinguisher before an emergency occurs.

Remember the PASS Acronym:
Pull the pin
Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire
Squeeze the trigger
Sweep the extinguisher from side to side
Fire extinguishers should only be used when the fire is small and contained.
