When is the Town's taxation year?
The taxation year is the same as the calendar year (January 1 - December 31). Property taxes are due July 31st of each year.
Is there a discount if I pay early?
No, there is no discount to property taxes if paid early.
When are tax notices mailed out?
They are usually mailed out by the end of May.
What happens if I do not pay my taxes?
If the current year's taxes remain unpaid or if there is a balance left owing after July 31st, you will be charged a monthly interest penalty of 1.5%. If your taxes remain unpaid or if there is a balance left owing after December 31st, your property will be declared in arrears and charged a 10% interest penalty.
Why do I pay school taxes when I don't have children or I am a senior?
All property owners whether you have children attending school or not are required by provincial law to pay school tax. The funds for schools are to be collected by municipalities. The Town of Rosthern bills and collects for the school tax, the municipality has no control over the Ministry of Education mill rates.
Am I able to appeal my property taxes?
No. Only your assessment can be appealed. Changes to your assessment will only be considered if your assessment appeal is received during the appeal period.
